Details regarding on-going research as well as highlighting opportunities for applied research from the business community of Maine will be made easily accessible from our website as it develops. The Office of Research and Economic Development is advancing Maine's economy by facilitating the creation of new ideas and products through research and development, the growth of new companies, and support for existing companies. We connect businesses, research organizations, economic developers and individuals with the research expertise and resources of the University of Maine. We support the commercialization of University of Maine research through intellectual property protection, technology transfer, entrepreneurship training, new venture formation, business incubation, and economic development activities.

Services for Companies

Prototype Development - UMaine researchers and faculty have the expertise and facilities to help companies create prototypes for many early-stage technologies. UMaine assistance can shorten the time to market for new technologies and maximize their value.

Problem Solving - Partnering with various UMaine departments, DIC taps into the expertise and resources available on campus. DIC works with companies to identify and solve specific needs or problems such as process or product improvements. DIC often collaborates with private sector partners to receive outside funding for research projects.

Pilot Production - UMaine houses a number of pilot production plants and demonstration facilities both on campus in Orono and around the state that can help companies with the development of prototypes, troubleshooting projects, and small-scale pilot production. Trained technicians and staff are on-site to facilitate projects and to provide any necessary resources.

Economic Development

ORED partners with economic development organizations throughout Maine to support the growth of the state's economy. Our partnerships are an important component of our strategy to create new jobs and companies through research and development. ORED also supports the state's efforts to attract and retain new companies by connecting them to UMaine's research and students.
